Background: Leprogy or Morbus Hansen is an infectious disease caused by mycobacterium leprae infection that primarily attacks the peripheral nerve, further attacks the skin, oral mucosa, upper respiratory tract, retikoloendotel system, eyes , muscles, bone and testicles. The number of leprosy patients in South Sulawesi in 2005 were 1.186 peoples, consist of pausi bacillary type were 285 peoples and multi bacillary type were 1.601 peoples, prevalence average 2/3 per 10.000 peoples (Depkes Makassar,2006).
Objective: To determine the effect of high protein – high calorie diet on nutritional status in patients with leprosy were treated in hospital Dr.Tadjuddin Chalid Makassar.
Methode: This study design is quasi –experimental with intervention restricting high protein- high calorie by the installation of nutrition in hospital. Samples were 30 directly elected by the criteria of high protein- high calorie diet, compos mentis, type II leprosy reactions & willing to participate in research
Results: In the beggining, around 100% of patients were undernutrition and change to 70.0% in the end of the study. Energy intake of leprosy patients before intervention TKTP diet was low as much as 86.7%, and change to 6.7% after intervention. For the Protein intake, around 96.7% of patients were low intake of Protein before intervention and change to 16.7% after intervention. Protein intake of patients with leprosy before giving dietary TKTP less by 29 people (96.7%) and after administration of a diet lacking residual TKTP 6 people (16.7%) or 3.3% initially quite simply changed into 83.3%. There TKTP effect of diet on nutritional status (BMI) of leprosy patients in which the initial BMI was 16.89 ± 0.95 (kg / m 2) turn out to be 17.82 ± 1.01 (kg / m 2) after administration TKTP diet. BMI of patient also significant increased from 16.89±0.95 before intervention to 17.82±1.01 after intervention.
Recommendation: It is recommended in the feeding of patients with leprosy is High Calorie High Protein diet (TKTP) and performed routine monitoring of body weight every month to evaluate the magnitude of the effect of the change in nutritional status of leprosy patients
