Background: The good feeding practices is is essential for survival, growth, development and nutritional status of children. Children are not getting enough nutrients resulting in growth retardation. The level of knowledge of mothers about complementary feeding in South Sulawesi Maros still low.
Objectives: To determine the effect of nutritional counseling to increase maternal knowledge and attitudes about complementary feeding in infant.
Methods: A quasi-experimental study with pre-test approach to post-test only design. The samples were mothers who have less knowledge of nutrition, particularly in the Village District of Maccini Baji, Lau Maros. Each mother was given nutritional counseling three times a month. Measurement of nutritional knowledge and attitude of mothers use questionnaires.
Results: The mean score of knowledge before and after nutrition counseling were 53.76±10.24 and 60±10.32. The mean score of maternal attitudes about complementary feeding before and after nutritional counseling were 22.93 ± 2.29 and 26.23±1.34. Maternal nutritional knowledge increased significantly between before and after nutritional counseling (p = 0.003). The attitude of the mother also increased significantly between before and after nutritional counseling (p = 0.001).
Conclusion: Nutritional counseling can improve nutritional knowledge and attitudes about complementary feeding
